About me

Hi, I'm Rob Sprackling, I am an experienced screenwriter and an award winning writer/director.

Along with my writing partner John Smith, I conceived and wrote the original screenplay for the Disney feature GNOMEO & JULIET and the UK comedy feature film MIKE BASSETT: ENGLAND MANAGER (plus the TV series spin off MIKE BASSETT: MANAGER). We have written the movie sequel MIKE BASSETT: INTERIM MANAGER for Steve Barron/BFI and are in the process of raising finance for production. We are currently writing our original feature VILLAGE IDIOT for Aardman Animation and did a little bit of work on SHAUN THE SHEEP for our old mate Mark Burton. We wrote an adaptation of ANIMAL FARM which is gearing up to be made as a motion capture feature film with actor/director Andy Serkis and producer Jonathan Cavendish at their Ealing Studio based production company The Imaginarium. The movie already has some big name Hollywood cast attached. We worked on an animated feature film, POURQUOI J'AI PAS MANGE MON PERE which came out across France in April 2015 starring and driected by Jamel Debouzze (PARIS MATCH gave it 5 Stars). I am attached to direct the feature film of my original screenplay RISE OF THE APPLIANCES.

My first children's book BORN AGAIN BEN was published in hardback in late 2013 and paperback in May 2015 and is available to buy through Amazon (see link opposite). I have sold the film rights to Hollywood producer Peter Safran, who is currently develpoping it as an animated feature with Rob Minkoff (director of the Lion King) attached.

Over the years I have sold several spec scripts to Hollywood studios and UK production companies including BLACKWATER ZOO to Hensons/Fox, CUPID X to BBC Films/Icon and THE QUEEN'S CORGI to Ivan Reitman (Up in the Air, Ghostbusters) at Montecito Pictures.

I have done numerous page one rewrites including TORTOISE VS HARE for Aardman Animation/ Dreamworks, MARIAH MUNDI AND THE MIDAS BOX for E-Motion, BITCH BITCH BITCH for New Line Studios and FRENCH EXCHANGE for Buena Vista, plus extended treatments such as THE POLAR EXPRESS for Playtone/Warner Bros, HAROLD AND THE PURPLE CRAYON for Sony, JUMANJI 2: ZATHURA for Columbia Pictures and 20th CENTURY BOY for Miramax/HAL plus plenty of comedy punch ups on films from SHOOTING FISH to FIVE CHILDREN AND IT.

I wrote and directed the short film GREEN MONKEY winning the New York International Short Film Festival and the Brest Film Festival in France.  My second short RISE OF THE APPLIANCES (which I directed as a precursor to the feature film) has won several international awards including the British Horror Award at the Empire, Leicester Sq. I completed my 3rd short MAN'S BEST FRIEND in November 2015, starring Lorraince Bruce and Nigel Planer. It will be going out to film festivals over the next 18 months.

I was a consultant at the Jim Henson company working alongside Richard Curtis, Duncan Kenworthy and Anthony Minghella overseeing all Henson's TV and film output and was lead writer on the children's BAFTA nominated series MUDDLE EARTH.  I also created the bible and pilot episodes for the forthcoming DANGER MOUSE TV series for the BBC. I recently wrote the pilot episodes and Xmas special of the DENNIS THE MENACE reboot for D. C Thompson.

I am a member of BAFTA and the WGA (Writers Guild of America) and am represented by Charlie Ferraro (UTA) in the US and Gemma Hirst (GHA) in the UK.
