Rob Sprackling Screenwriter/Director

About me

Hi, I'm Rob Sprackling, I am an experienced screenwriter and an award winning writer/director. I have worked extensively both as a solo writer and in collaboration with writing partner Johnny Smith.

My work includes conceiving and writing the original screenplay for the Disney film GNOMEO & JULIET (starring James McAvoy, Emily Blunt and Michael Caine, with music by Elton John, it took nearly $200 million at the worldwide box office); the UK comedy feature MIKE BASSETT: ENGLAND MANAGER, (starring Ricky Tomlinson and Amanda Redman, it was the highest grossing, low budget Brit film at the UK box office that year); writing and exec producing the ITV series spin off MIKE BASSETT: MANAGER (the most watched ITV sitcom of the last 20 years); and conceiving and writing the forthcoming animated feature THE QUEEN'S CORGI (starring Jack Whitehall, Julie Walters, Ray Winstone, Matt Lucas, Sheridan Smith and Tom Courtenay) which has sold to over 60 countries around the world and comes out on general release in the UK on 5th July 2019. I co-wrote the original feature screenplay VILLAGE IDIOT for Aardman Animation which is slated for production in 2021 (a very long way away) and have worked with my good friends at Aardman on numerous screenplays, including doing a brief punch up on the SHAUN THE SHEEP movie and EARLY MAN. I co-wrote an adaptation of ANIMAL FARM for Andy Serkis and Jonathan Cavendish at their Ealing Studio based production company The Imaginarium and worked on the French animated feature POURQUOI J'AI PAS MANGE MON PERE directed by Jamel Debouzze (PARIS MATCH gave it 5 Stars).

I have written and am attached to direct my first feature RISE OF THE APPLIANCES next year. My children's book BORN AGAIN BEN is available in hard and paperback through Amazon and I am currently adapting the book as an animated feature.

Over the years I have worked with pretty much every Hollywood studio and major UK production company - including Dreamworks, Disney, Fox, Paramount, Colombia, New Line, Warners, Universal etc - and Working Title, the BFI and BBC Films here in the UK either selling my own original screenplays or being brought on as a writer to develop animated and live action projects including THE POLAR EXPRESSJUMANJI 2: ZATHURA, SHOOTING FISH and FIVE CHILDREN AND IT.

I have written and directed three award winning short films including GREEN MONKEY, RISE OF THE APPLIANCES and MAN'S BEST FRIEND.

I worked as a writer and consultant for the Jim Henson company for many years and was lead writer on the children's BAFTA nominated series MUDDLE EARTH.  I also helped create the bible and wrote the pilot episodes for the new DANGER MOUSE and DENNIS AND GNASHER TV series reboots.

I am a member of BAFTA and the WGA and am represented by Charlie Ferraro (UTA) in the US and Gemma Hirst (GHA) in the UK.
